Police leave Renegades feeling blue
In the last fixture before the festive break (and perhaps more importantly the last fixture before our fat hairy Welshman gets officially ruined in New York), confidence was high due to a weakened Police team slowly improving performances over the last few weeks.
Renegades took the field minus star fly half Hendo but had a suitable replacement in the fatter, unfitter future second row Phil Hall. From the kick off, the early exchanges were relatively evenly matched until the Police’s sexual deviant of a winger Neville Zuill picked and went from a ruck (what’s a winger doing in a ruck?) side stepped the full back and ghosted under the posts for the opening score. Dan Cole was successful with the easy conversion.
As if giving the boys in blue a seven point head start wasn’t enough, Renegades felt it would be more advantageous to give the Coppers another soft try, with Cole hitting a nice line out wide to feed Zuill again for his second try. Cole was again on target with the conversion to give the Fluff a 14-0 lead after about 2 minutes.
This seemed to finally awaken the black & whites as they were next on the score sheet with a Phil Hall penalty to reduce the deficit to 14-3. The boys’ tails were up and a try by Angus was soon to follow, set up by good hands by Tom Healy and a barn-storming 3 metre run by Dunks. Phil took a leave out of Hendo’s book and duly missed the conversion.
With half-time approaching, Renegades were desperate for the next score and they were duly rewarded for their efforts. Following a break by Healy, the ball was eventually recycled out wide to our prop-look-a-like Conor McGlynn, who did his best to butcher the situation (he’ll tell you otherwise until he’s blue in the face) before finally popping inside to Scott Slater for the try. Despite the temptation, no-one high-fived Scotty for his first try of the season but Hall did add the extras to give Renegades a deserved 15-14 advantage at the half time.
