After a successful and hard fought semi-final win over Mariners, Renegades Birds went onto to face the much improved Police chicks, who had eased past Teachers in the previous round.

Renegade Ladies 2010

Going into the Final, the Police women were full of confidence, with various side bets being put on the Police to be the first time in 2 seasons to beat the all mighty and all conquering Renegades Birds! They had even resorted to additional training sessions, including 4 spinning classes in 2 weeks in attempt (that would prove to be fruitless) to overcome the Renegades.

The final round of the Bermuda rugby league took place on Friday evening at National Sports Center, and despite nothing but pride being at stake, the large crowd in attendance witnessed some cracking matches.

Police 3 - Renegades 8

Renegades put in a clinical display to dispatch a gallant Police team. Laura Haynes was the star of the show as she grabbed five tries for Renegades, with Ruth Boo Leston, Karen Peckett and Maria Dobinson each scoring one as they ran out 8-3 winners.

Saphia Tonkin with two and one from Julia Mansfield were the scorers for the Police ladies.

Renegades 12 – 5 Mariner’s

Whoever won the toss and elected for the Renegades to play into the wind in the first half must have been a genius.  Despite the blustery conditions, the Renegades conjured up some of the best rugby of the season so far.

From the kick off, Renegades gathered the ball at about the 16th attempt and cleared their lines up to the half way line. Some great pressure by Dan and Francois on the usually reliable Mariners line-out gave the Renegades an opportunity to attack from turn over ball.  Once the ball was in the midfield, a great dummy run from Scotty allowed Hendo to slice through the Mariner’s back line like a hot knife through butter (or as the late Bill McLaren would say, like a demented ferret up a drainpipe!). Hendo drew the full back and passed the Boycie, who was coming onto the ball like bull with a sore heed, and scored to the right of the posts. Darragh kicked the conversion like he was kicking 3 pounds o’haggis, and subsequently arsed it up!

Renegades 0 - 0 Mariners

The point gained in this game secured another league title for the Renegades Ladies. Although the scoreline might not reflect it, this was a very entertaining game, with both sides making opportunities to break the deadlock.

In what was a very windy and wet day, the Renegades sheila’s started off the brighter, and after some early pressure from the Mariner’s, pressed them back onto their own line.  Some quick plays of the ball and good work in the midfield, with passes and loops a plenty, kept the pressure on.

The teams turned at half time with the Renegades definitely in the ascendency, however would a lack of numbers tell on the Renegades as fatigue set in given that the Mariner’s had a small army on the side line?...  Not at all.

Despite Ruth obtaining a concussion one of the fella’s would have been proud of, the supreme fitness and work ethic of the girls kicked in and denied the Mariners any points.

All in all, given the conditions, this was a good result, and further more, another clean sheet was kept. That reads one try against all season!  If only the men could have achieved that…!

On a glorious day at Malabar Field, Bermuda, both Renegades men & ladies looked to build on positive results the week before.

Renegades ladies won a tight game with Mariners 2-0, maintaining their 100% start, and keeping yet another clean sheet.  The electric Laura Haynes scored both tries, the second coming off a magical pass by Gemma.

Renegades men took the field in confident fashion after their last minute win over the Police last week.  Mariners were still looking for their first win of the season after close games against the Police & Teachers.

Saturday saw the inaugural silverware of the season return to Renegades with strong winning for both ladies and men.

In the men's tournament, Greg 'Boycie' Garside's interception try set up a 10-3 victory against Police in the first match of the day. This was followed by a resolute 0-0 draw against Teachers. This set up a winner takes all final match against reigning Sandy 's champions Mariners. A well taken try from James Roobottom after a line breaking run from Brendan Plessis set the Gades up for the win. After strong defence at the death, a final score of 8-5 meant Renegades ran winners of both the match and the tournament.

The ladies retained their trophy with another confident showing, running out victorious in all 3 of their games. First up, a strong performance saw Renegades beat Police by 3-0, with tries by Laura Haynes (2) & Melissa Field. Next up came Teachers. Again, Renegades showed their class, running out victorious by 5-0, thanks to scores by Melissa (2), Vanessa, Nicky and Jess. As in the men's competition, Mariners would stand in the way of Renegades and glory. This turned out to be the toughest fixture of the day, with Renegades overcoming Mariners 3-0 with two break-away scores by Laura.
