Renegades Retain Mad Hatters Trophies

The new season started with the traditional round robin Mad Hatters Cup. With a few key players missing and temperature hotter than the sun it was going to be a tough day all round. However we were helped out by some strong performances from our rookies. Nash Jr played well at full back, Dave the Rave ran some good support lines and Brittle Billy provided good service at scrum half before being hit by a sniper midway through the 2nd game. Five time rookie Mikey also scrummaged well at loose head.

In the first game, Renegades came away with a 5-0 win against Police after some strong defense led to a breakaway try for Cedric Ennis. Greenslade rolled back the years with a storming run putting Mini Matt Damon on his ass. However, an 8-0 loss against Teachers, after Jimmy Bum let the winger jog past him, left us needing a big win against Mariners in the final game to stay in contention. After a slow start to the game, Renegades kicked a penalty on the stroke of half time (despite some serious objections from the club president) to take a 3-0 lead. Second half tries came from Dan B and a strong run from Jimmy to make up for his earlier mistake. However Richard Cumberland was unable to convert which meant the game finished 13-0. Renegades would take the title if Police could beat the Teachers and there was some reluctant cheering from the Renegades as Police held on to an early lead to win the game.

Meanwhile, the ladies team cruised to victory with 3 straight wins. Rookie Leah got a try on her debut and Melissa went over for 3 tries. The highlight of the day however went to Captain Mully who put in a textbook tackle to stop the Teachers breaking through, before realising that they were playing touch.

Sadly the Trophies were not available at the pitch so there was no presentation, but fortunately we still have the photo from last year so we can recycle it for the match report.
