Champagne brace inspires come back

After a piss poor pre-season the majority of the Renegades looked like they might be more at home in a darts match rather than lining up for the curtain raiser of the 2018/19 rugby season on National Sports Centre North Field’s luscious green pastures.

Perhaps the pre-season had lulled the opposition into a false sense of security as the Renegades started well and were quickly rewarded with and converted a penalty several minutes into the game.

The Renegades had the majority of possession and were dominant at scrum time with Trae the Dog Whisperer and Mikey Williams (Yes – the one you all know from the 90’s!) causing the Teachers front row plenty of issues.

However, Teachers have shown time and again that when a team makes a mistake they have the outside backs who can run the length of the field and score, which is exactly what they did. Twice.

Despite their dominance the Renegades went into half time 3-14 down.

The second half was all Renegades thanks to a few tactical tweaks made by Coach Barchiballs and Captain Champagne Charlie grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck.

Within 8 minutes of the second half Champagne, Renegades Captain and the 18th Earl of Norwich, ran in two converted tries which put Renegades firmly back in the driving seat. With their tails up and the wind behind them the Renegades never looked back.

Resident Renegades Ranga Robinho cut a great line from outside centre, scything through the Techers defence to pick up a try like a hot ginger knife through butter. Added to this McChin belly-flopped over in the corner to secure the bonus point win – President Nash who loves Renegades more than his family (but less than Corona) commented with a tear in his eye that it reminded him of Big Daddy in his heyday.

As Bermuda’s best kicker PK is currently on sabbatical at Mariners trying to save the green and yellow whales, Champagne showed no sign of nerves at having to step into PK’s diminutive boots, ending the day with 3 conversions out of 4 and 19 points to his name.

With Renegades running in 26 unanswered points in the 2nd half the final score was 29-14.
